AI Data Center Power Calculator

IT kW = racks × kW/rack, then facility kW = IT kW × PUE. Example: 100 × 100 kW × 1.25 = 10 MW IT and 12.5 MW facility. Planning estimate, not a stamped design.

Calculator

Enter an average IT kilowatt figure per rack. You do not need a GPU model. The result updates as you type.

Whole number, 1–100,000 racks. Example: 100.
Average IT power consumed by each AI rack. Range 1–1,000 kW. Example: 80, 100, or 142.5.
PUE is total facility power divided by IT equipment power. Range 1.00–3.00. Example: 1.25.

About this calculator

This planning estimate rolls rack IT power up to facility power. It does not size UPS, generators, cooling, or breakers. Continue on the power calculator hub, or read GPU rack power and PUE planning for the assumptions behind the inputs.

Your AI data center is estimated to require 10.00 MW of IT power and 12.50 MW of total facility power. The difference is power used by cooling, power distribution, lighting, and other facility infrastructure represented by the PUE.

This is an estimate for planning purposes, not a detailed electrical design.

Facility kilowatts are real power. Convert them to kVA before UPS or transformer screening.

IT load and facility power formula

IT load (kW) = number of racks × kW per rack

Facility power (kW) = IT load × PUE

Facility overhead (kW) = facility power − IT load

Worked example: 100 racks × 100 kW/rack = 10,000 kW (10.00 MW) IT load. × 1.25 PUE = 12,500 kW (12.50 MW) facility power. Overhead = 2,500 kW (2.50 MW).

1 MW = 1,000 kW. The model ignores redundancy, diversity, transformer losses beyond the PUE ratio, utility limits, and growth margin. Read what PUE includes and why rack kilowatts vary before treating a result as a design input. After facility kW, use kW to kVA.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I estimate AI data center power?

IT kW = racks × kW per rack. Facility kW = IT kW × PUE. Example: 100 × 100 × 1.25 = 10 MW IT and 12.5 MW facility. That is a planning estimate, not a detailed electrical design.

What is the difference between IT load and facility power?

IT load is rack computing power. Facility power adds cooling, distribution, lighting, and other overhead through PUE. Overhead = facility power − IT load.

What PUE should I use for a planning estimate?

Use a measured PUE when you have one. Early screening often tries about 1.15–1.25 for liquid-assisted halls and about 1.3–1.5 for air-cooled halls. See PUE planning. PUE does not size the cooling plant.

Is 100 kW per rack a standard AI rack?

No. Rack power changes with the server, accelerators, network, storage, cooling, and workload. 100 kW is only this page’s default example. See GPU rack power before you lock a density.
