Amps to kVA formula
Single-phase: kVA = I × V ÷ 1000
Three-phase (line-to-line): kVA = √3 × I × V_L-L ÷ 1000
Three-phase (line-to-neutral): kVA = 3 × I × V_L-N ÷ 1000
- I — balanced RMS line current (amps)
- V — RMS voltage matching the formula basis (L-L or L-N)
- PF not required for kVA — use Amps to kW for real power at actual PF

Put amps in A2 and volts in B2:
- Single-phase:
=(A2*B2)/1000 - Three-phase L-L:
=(SQRT(3)*A2*B2)/1000 - Three-phase L-N:
=(3*A2*B2)/1000
DC note (not this calculator’s default)
For DC, apparent power collapses to kVA = I × V ÷ 1000 (same as single-phase AC). This page defaults to AC 1φ/3φ. Prefer DC-specific tooling when sizing battery buses.
Example 1: 100 A × 480 V × √3 ÷ 1000 = 83.14 kVA (3φ L-L).
Example 2: 60 A × 240 V ÷ 1000 = 14.4 kVA (1φ) → @PF 1.0 ≈ 14.4 kW / 19.3 HP.
Example 3: 200 A × 400 V × √3 ÷ 1000 = 138.56 kVA (3φ L-L)—next screen a breaker on Breaker Size or a set on Generator Size.

When to use which tool
| Goal | Tool |
|---|---|
| Convert amps → kVA (this page) | Amps to kVA |
| Convert kVA → line amps | kVA to Amps |
| Convert amps → kW (needs PF) | Amps to kW |
| Generator kVA from load | Generator Size |
| Screen breaker / cable from amps | Breaker Size · Cable Size |
Typical uses: generator kVA from measured feeder amps, transformer apparent-power screening, UPS/inverter kVA from AC current, and distribution planning before breaker/cable selection.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert amps to kVA for a three-phase system?
Use kVA = √3 × I × V ÷ 1000 with line-to-line voltage. Example: 100 A @ 400 V ≈ 69.28 kVA. For L-N voltage, open Advanced and use kVA = 3 × I × V_L-N ÷ 1000.
What is 100 amps to kVA?
At 480 V 3φ ≈ 83.14 kVA. At 400 V 3φ ≈ 69.28 kVA. At 240 V 1φ ≈ 24 kVA. Use the 100 A chart row or presets.
Do I need power factor to convert amps to kVA?
No for kVA. The W / kW / HP figures shown under the result assume PF 1.0 only. For real kW at a known PF, use Amps to kW.
How do I calculate amps to kVA in Excel?
1φ: =(A2*B2)/1000. 3φ L-L: =(SQRT(3)*A2*B2)/1000. 3φ L-N: =(3*A2*B2)/1000 (amps in A2, volts in B2).
How is amps to kVA different from kVA to amps?
This page is amps → kVA. Reverse conversion is on kVA to Amps.
Is amps to kvar the same as amps to kVA?
No. kVAR is reactive power. Use a power-triangle / PF tool when you need kVAR—not this converter.
