kVA to kW formula

kW = kVA × PF  ·  kVA = kW ÷ PF (reverse on kW to kVA)

  • kVA — apparent power (nameplate / transformer rating)
  • kW — real (active) power delivered to the load
  • PF — power factor (0–1); cos φ for sinusoidal systems

Example: 100 kVA × 0.8 = 80 kW. Reactive ≈ √(100² − 80²) = 60 kVAR.

How do I convert kVA to kW?

Use kW = kVA × PF. Example: 100 kVA × 0.8 = 80 kW.

How many kW is 1 kVA?

At PF 1.0 → 1 kW. At PF 0.8 → 0.8 kW. At PF 0.85 → 0.85 kW. Use the 1 kVA preset above.

What is 20 kVA in kW?

At PF 0.8 → 16 kW. At PF 0.85 → 17 kW. At PF 1.0 → 20 kW.

Is kVA the same as kW?

No. They match only when PF = 1.0. Otherwise kW < kVA for lagging loads.

Do I need power factor to convert kVA to kW?

Yes. Without PF you cannot get real power from apparent power.
